2006 Honda Accord Coupe

If you stepped inside a time machine and went back to 1976, you would witness the celebration of our country’s bicentennial, Jimmy Carter would be the president elect, “Rocky” the box office champ, and oh – Honda would have just introduced the first Accord hatchback. Having felt the sting of the oil crisis a few years prior and realizing that fossil fuels were indeed expensive, Americans were considering purchasing smaller, more economical cars. The newly introduced Accord took this concept to a higher level by offering more room, style and power while still being practical, reliable and easy to park.

Three decades later, in 2006, we find Honda has nearly perfected the Accord Sedan. The 2006 Accord’s mantra is the family car should be exciting to drive, reliable and gives strong residuals. Gone are the days when driving a four door sedan meant compromising on features that are essential to driving enthusiasts. Style, handling, safety, fuel efficiency and the surefootedness of a bulletproof engine have all been a vital part of the success of the Accord Sedan. The 2006 Accord builds on the safety, handling and engine prowess expected from the ilk.

On the outside, the 2006 Accord Sedan has a distinctive look that is classy and sensual. The sophisticated front nose has an aristocratic look that incorporates headlights and turn signals into a single, sleek unit, enhancing the car’s look and aerodynamics. The uncluttered lines encompass the entire car from front to back creating a sense of mystery and sophistication.

Open the door and the inside is no disappointment. The sporty steering wheel, instrument cluster and tactile cockpit combine both analog and digital features to good effect, giving the 2006 Accord a decidedly up market feel. The speedometer’s numerals are in the driver’s line of sight and the audio, climate control, and Satellite Navigation system are within easy reach and grouped logically. The state of the art steering wheel has a good to grip and controls for all three. The front seats are supportive to the lower back and comfortable for long drives, and back seats are roomy enough for two adults or three kids. The new Accord is refined and feels tailor made for the entire family.

Spur on the accelerator in any of the Accord’s VS, LX, EX iterations, or the Hybrid and you will see it is no slouch. The car rewards the driver with a choice of nimble engines and equally responsive handling. For 2006, you can choose from a peppy 2.4-Liter, 166 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, a sonorous 3.0-Liter, 244 horsepower V-6, and an agile 253 horsepower Hybrid that posts fuel efficiency of 37 mpg highway, 29 mpg in the city. The Accord Hybrid features the distinguished gas-electric engine with plenty of low end torque. Now you can have even greater quickness for climbing ramps or merging in traffic while saving on fuel.

Bright technology makes the 2006 Accord Hybrid one of the most innovative cars on the road. For example, the 2006 Accord Hybrid features Honda’s advanced Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology, VCM is able to turn off three of the engine’s six cylinders by pausing their fuel injection and keeping the intake and exhaust valves closed. The reduced displacement enhances the mileage and range. Press your foot down, and VCM immediately re-opens the valves for quick acceleration that is both smooth and instant. All 2006 Accord engines also feature Honda’s F1 racing team’s derived Drive-by-Wire Throttle System™ for immediate response, and the i-VTEC system to give greater acceleration across the entire RPM band. With a MSRP of $18,225 for the 2006 Accord Sedan and a MSRP of $30,140 for the Accord Hybrid you can be certain when you feel the need for speed, you can pass with authority.

The advanced invulnerability of the new Accord has earned it a 5-star frontal crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the highest honor to be bestowed on any car. Every Accord has standard daytime running lights; dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags that inflate based on the severity of impact; front side and side curtain airbags are also standard equipment, designed to prevent injury in side impact collisions; an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to prevent wheel lockup and enhance steering control; front crush zones made from high-tensile steel to absorb and re-distribute energy away from the passenger cabin; side-impact door beams and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) to balance brake loading in hard braking conditions; and on all V-6 models, brake assist to enhance stopping.

When the Honda Accord first debuted 30 years ago, it became an instant sensation. The 2006 Accord is, as expected, a more refined, elegant, safe, practical, roomy, performance sedan. It has a proven track record of success. The Accord represents Honda’s commitment to drivers, passengers, safety, and comfort. What is surprising is that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
